Debating is a co-curricular activity at Catholic Ladies' College.
Debating is an activity that engages students in discussion of important
issues and develops excellent communication and research skills. Debating
provides the opportunity for students to be part of a team, research
a topic, plan logical arguments and deliver a speech in front of an
audience. Debating develops self-confidence and develops clarity of
ideas.
Each year students in Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 have the opportunity
to enter a statewide debating competition.
Catholic Ladies' College has a strong tradition in debating with
over sixty girls involved in about twelve teams. The school enters
one competition - the Debaters' Association of Victoria Competition.
DAV debates are held two nights a week in semester 1. The DAV
competition involves five preliminary rounds over the first two terms.Any
team that wins three of these four debates goes on to the finals in
Term 3. There can be as many as five debates in the finals, which
is a knockout competition.
It is our goal to give as many girls as possible the opportunity
to speak in debates. To this end we enter as many year level teams
as possible in the competition.
Each year our College debates against Parade College in the "Great
Debate" and a College team debates against a Teachers' team on
Open Day. Both the Captain and Vice-Captain of Debating assist with
organisation and team meetings.
Debating allows participants to meet new people, meet new challenges
and, most importantly, have fun.
